    The only real reason why people prefer one of these programs over the other is popularity, I suppose, and as far as I'm aware MSN is the most popular in many communities, not just this one. (For instance cgtalk.com where I also post frequently)

    Haven't used MSN in years. Though I did have ICQ at one point, for those rare occasions when I needed to get a hold of Diragono.
