I think about this every time I hold utter contempt for some mccain voter, but their world views are so completely backwards and their disinterest in the incredible amount of lies linked to mccain/palin makes it hard for me to believe they're actually human. I think the most reasonable argument against Obama I've heard so far is, "I aint voting for no damn muslim nigger." If you're going to be completely ignorant about the world around you you might as well go for the grand slam. The sad thing is I say this jokingly, but if mccain wins (and there's a good chance he will), that will be EXACTLY the reason why. No informed person can possibly agree with mccain's policies or his party's tactics, and though Obama isn't a saint himself, he sure as hell looks like one in comparison. I can honestly say that if obama's opponent was a reasonable candidate that I just happened to disagree with I wouldn't believe he was stupid, and neither would Ninespine as you suggest.

CEO is correct. if we were choosing between the McCain of 1999 or Obama, I would say we have two reasonable choices whose differences are both *mostly* respectable policy differences. That simple isn't the case now. McCain has become a straight-up compulsive liar whose policies are borderline sociopathic. Let's take a look at some of the things McCain would seek to do, if not actually do, in his first term:

    1. Go to war with Iran, and possibly Pakistan.
    2. Make abortion illegal.
    3. Continue the block on Federal funding to embryonic stem cell research (the most promising medical research being done in decades).
    4. Make the Bush tax cuts (which sunk our economy) even more extreme in favor of the rich.
    5. Make the Bush tax cuts (which sunk our economy) permanent.
    6. Cut taxes to oil companies, who take their product from PUBLIC LAND, yet pay a minimum in taxes already.
    7. Do nothing about the loopholes which allow the rich to funnel money through offshore banks to avoid taxation.
    8. Bring even more lobbyists (especially oil lobbyists) into the White House
    9. Increase government spending on "Faith Based Initiatives" DRAMATICALLY, which is code words for: Give our money to churches and religious schools.
    10. Fight any sexual education program that is not "abstinence only", a concept which has proved to be a dismal failure, resulting in higher rates of teenage pregnancy and STD transmission.
    11. Fight contraception distribution to anywhere in the world, including in the United States and in Africa, where AIDs is still a crisis.
    12. Fight birth control distribution in the same way.
    13. Expand the government's torture programs, which have done nothing but ruin our credibility and make more people take up the anti-US cause.
    14. Continue the expansion of the Patriot Act, which has eroded our civil liberties past most other first world nations.
    15. Cut funding to any social programs he can get his hands on. This includes dismantling SOCIAL SECURITY.

Oh, and let's not forget that the guy is TOTALLY INCOMPETENT. He doesn't know the differences between a Sunni and a Shiite. He ADMITS he doesn't know anything about the economy (but he plans to read Alan Greenspans book, which suggests that he thinks the economy is something you can read one book on and be set to be President).

Oh, and let's not forget that his VP is EVEN MORE INCOMPETENT. She only recently obtained her Visa, and has left the country ONE TIME. Her qualifications for being President are a few years as a Mayor of a town of 9,000 people (where she fired everyone and hired her unqualified friends in their place) and less than TWO YEARS as governor. She thinks the fact that Alaska is NEAR RUSSIAN is ACTUAL FOREIGN POLICY EXPERIENCE. She doesn't know what the Bush Doctrine is (for those not "in the know", it is the justification for attacking Iraq as a pre-emptive strike based on bad intelligence and outright lies). This is THE most important foreign policy document of the last decade, and she has no idea what it is.

None of this is "hearsay" or things I inferred. These are things based on direct statements and policies. if you think any of that makes America better:

    You are fucking stupid.

I think thats just the name of the game, playing to the crowd, every polititan does it. I know that the speech that Obama gave in San Fransisco to an anti-war group didn't quite match what he said in his interview to the Army Times and Marine Corps Times. But ya everyone should stick to their guns, so to speak.

There's a difference between appealing to the group you are speaking before and what McCain does. He flip flops to an extreme degree on nearly every issue. The torture issue is one of the most ridiculous of his flip flops. he made his anti-torture stance one of his CORE issues publically, but he does not fight torture politically in any way, in fact supporting it when he can't run away from avoiding the issue.

I totally agree. I was very put off when I heard McCain talking about when and where torture could be used, but honestly I believe that he was doing it as a political move, not an honest-to-God switch. Now which one of these is a "flip-flop" is neither here nor there. But it is a fact that McCain has brought up bills and amendments to bills, which have passed, which have, at least in my opinion, show McCain's stance as agianst torture. Of course I won't make such judgements for you, and we both know that what text on a document says can be meaningless depending on how its worded.
    http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?r109:1:./temp/~r1099sdNIY:e0:
Its a Library of Congress link and it has the text to the amendment of the 2006 Department of Defense Appropriations Act to which I'm refering to.
Its also true that McCain has voted in favor of bills that would either expand or not limit what interrogators(belonging to certain orginizations, ie CIA, FBI, etc) can and cannot do, but these were amendments to other bills as well. And to my knowledge McCain decided to vote for these firstly because he supported the orginal bill so much and secondly because the amendment would limit the CIA to interrogation techniques in the US Army Field Manual.

That verison is actually the older verison published in 1992, I couldn't find the newest verison and I wouldn't doubt if it was classified.

    Shoshone: Awesome.

Wiseone: There are issues it's safe to play politics on. You can play politics on minor economic issues, funding issues, etc. etc.. You don't play politics on human rights issues: PERIOD. To be fair, another issue you don't play politics on is civil rights, which Obama did just a couple of months ago. Realistically though, McCain is doing this on damn near every issue. From gay rights to the war in Iraq, he is changing hos positions on a weekly, sometimes daily basis. I'm not talking about minor changes in wording or ideology, I'm talking about direct policy statements that completely contradict each other.

    funny video, but serious question-

"I will reach out my hand to anyone. I have that record, and the scars to prove it" -John McCain.

How is that something you'd be proud to say? Just doesn't make sense to me.
  • Oh-WiseoneOh-Wiseone September 2008

I don't think its right to play politics on any issues, people should stick to their guns and be proud of it. I'm not defending McCain's political campaign, but obviously there is a difference between what they say to get elected and what they do in office. So even though McCain has recently backed off on his anti-tortue position, and Obama has said he'll increase the size of the Marine Corps and Army by 75,000 marines and soldiers, I don't believe McCain is going to be a friend of "torture/extreme interrogation advocates" or that Obama will really try to expain the Marine Corps and Army if either are elected.

McCain didn't "back off" the torture issue, he ACTIVELY supported torture, while publicly decrying it. As far as I know, Obama never stated anything that opposed his commitment to increasing the number of military personnel, but please give me a link if he did, as I would like to look into it further.

I'd also like to note that McCain's campaign has gone way, way over the line in their campaign ads. They have gone far enough that Obama was able to call it "lies" (a word that is forbidden in politics) without the media going after him. They have a campaign ad that accuses Obama of wanting to teach comprehensive sex education to five year olds, because he supported a program to teach children how to avoid sex predators.
