History Repeats Itself

Usually when things went bad it was because either Dhost fugged up or my ineptitude in updating the software caused a cataclysmic crash. Neither of those were the cause this time. I just came home from work yesterday and saw the install screen.

I backed up our files, but when I tried to reload the database all I was able to recover were our user names. Everything else: post counts, discussions, categories-- would not load up at all. After some reading I found this to be a flaw with Vanilla.

Reverted back to November 2010 again. The reason I am able to do this is because that is when we upgraded from Vanilla 1 to Vanilla 2 and Vanilla created an export tool which created a file that could easily be uploaded into the software to fully reboot the forum back to its original state. There has been no easy way to do this for simply rebooting your Vanilla 2 forum.

But now I have found that Vanilla created an export tool about a month ago, which means I can save our entire forum into one neat little file that can be easily uploaded into the software without a fuss. Meaning, in theory, that this should never happen again.

I can only assume HostGator had something to do with it, but all of my other sites I have on HostGator are having no issues at all. I have no idea.

TL;DR version: Site fucked up. Vanilla would not properly recognize my saved files in order to reboot system. Now Vanilla has created a simple export/import tool and next time there should be no problem saving our posts (is this the third time I've said that?).

The Gods of the Internet sweep through for their periodical cleansing of WCOM.

Sorry TMP. The way the file is saved it lists the names of the discussions, but only identifies the posts within them as numbers. I can't get it for you unless I were to upload it all up to reboot the forum, which I failed at.

I saved the webpage with the list of questions for which to prepare, TMP. Let me know if that's something you don't have.
