I'll only be posting in this thread, I was serious about not posting here again because of how shitty this place is but something has happened recently which I need to discuss, and I'm hoping we can have a serious discussion about it. If we can't then I'll just peace out for good. Before I begin, I would like to request that any post by 3ball or gorlath be deleted unless it is specifically related to this topic:

My grandfather died of lung cancer several months back. Recently my family was contacted by doctors from the Veteran's Association (a US government organization) who provided proof that the cancer was caused by asbestos exposure during his service in the navy and NOT smoking. Because of this, the asbestos suppliers will be paying my grandmother, aunt, mother, and uncle between 15-50 million dollars. The exact number is unknown, it depends on how much we get them to settle for, but our lawyer's firm has never lost an asbestos related case and has never settled for less than 15 million, not to mention that our case is foolproof since the US government admits asbestos exposure was the cause of death. At the very minimum, my mom and dad will receive a few million and my mother has promised me at least 1mil.

Now for the topic of discussion-

I'm 19 years old and a college student. How should I spend/invest/save 1 million dollars? What would you do? Would you buy a very nice house and then let the remaining money accumulate interest to pay for food and utilities? Would you try to turn 1 million into several million via the stock market? Would you put it all into separate banks to just live off the interest (about $40,000 a year)? Or would you risk it all to become filthy rich via hardcore investing, or opening a business, or real estate?

    discuss

If I had a million dollars, I would spread it everywhere and not immediately blow it all at once. First things first, pay off any debt's that you owe, any credit cards, loans, car payments etc, make sure you don't owe anything. If you know exactly where you are going to be living for an extended amount of time, buy a house. If not, wait until you know where you will settle down for a while. If you don't already have a car, might want to look into buying one (you could get something a lil nice, like a BMW or Benz and still be financially fine). Now with the actual investments, I would put a majority of it into stocks. If you have the time and understanding, investing in individual stocks over a long period of time yield really high value. Make sure your portfolio is balanced and diversified. If you don't have much confidence picking stocks, pick some ETF's. Mutual funds are also a good idea if you have no clue about stocks or have the time for them. The rest of your investments should be in real estate, which is amazingly cheap right now. There's good bargains everywhere for real estate so just find them. You can either buy and sell(wouldn't recommend unless you sell in long-term). Or you can rent the house to someone and have a steady source of income, granted you will have to take care of the house and fix anything that breaks when the tenant is in your house. Now I would set aside a portion of the money on cash for any unforeseeable events and emergencies. With the money left over, you can put some if it into low-risk bonds, CD's, savings account, or money market account. This income will be steady, safe, and guaranteed, so your returns won't be that great.

At the end of the day, I would not drastically change my daily life. A million dollars goes by pretty fast actually.

Agree with sho. Don't know if you want the hassle of dealing with real estate at age 19 though. And keep in mind the final point. A million dollars is not going to last you long enough for you to live in huge luxury for the rest of your life.

Also, don't count your chickens until they hatch.

Thanks for the good post. I'll take this time to mention that blowing all of it within a short period is out of the question, I am most definitely looking to invest, whether it be in real estate, stocks, mutual funds, bonds, etc. I'll pose another question for anyone to answer if they wish: what specific stocks would you buy? Any up and coming companies that seem promising?

hfswjeursjfdy: yeah of course. and it is a little bit premature for me to make plans, which is why I'm posing this thread as more of a 'what would you do with 1 million dollars' kind of thing. but, I am pretty sure things will turn out in my favor, we have the largest asbestos law firm hired and they guaranteed us at least a 15 million dollar sum. My grandfather worked on over a dozen asbestos-ridden sites over 20 years, and they've already put together a list of 42 asbestos supplying companies to sue. There was a similar case in 2007 where the family of another navy man who worked on a shipyard won 53 million dollars because he had mesothelioma, and his lawyer only sued 32 companies. We also have a very in-depth report from a panel of doctors working for the military which basically said the sole cause of death was lung cancer which developed because and ONLY because of asbestos exposure.

Even putting it in the bank and forgetting about it will net you $25,000 a year.

I have no interesting in investing, so I'd probably just keep doing exactly what I'm doing for a while. I'd pay what I owe to the Ontario government/my parents, put like four-fifths of it away, then keep going to school without money as an object (no living expenses, better food, eating at restaurants more, buying music and books often, parties, trips, etc.). I'd probably give some of friends a bit of money too if I didn't think they'd be offended.

I've probably throw a couple of thou to everyone on wcom, actually. 8-)

As for stock investment, even though I have extremely limited experience, I think it is important to keep your head. Don't think that you are smarter than everyone else. If some investment looks too good to be true, then... you know the rest. If you're really interested, read up on some Buffet/Graham books. You'll notice they emphasize long-term steady growth.

i'd first take care of all my needs. ie. pay any outstanding debts, buy a home and then invest the rest wisely with a bit left around for spending.. wisely. $1MM is a lot but you can waste it quickly very easily too.

i have invested some of my money and it's not even in the vicinity of 1M$ and i am already pleased with the profit from it..

plus , buying a house is overrated, (maybe buy-and-rent), save it until you'll have a family (which i'll guess will take a couple of years) and then buy your dream-house.. buying a house now you might make a wrong decision (you won't believe how many can you make, take it from me) which will result in you nedding to buy a new house spending more money, and in the realestate market 1M isn't much , not here in Israel at least..

Don't buy a house. Don't fucking buy it at 19 anyway. That house and your money will disappear fast. You can pay for the whole house? Sure. Will you pay for all of those stupid ass utilities for long as a college student? Fuck no. Put a little bit of it for college down if you need to. They will most likely try to throw your money into a couple of annuities which grow with a fix interested rate over time. 40k a year will eventually add up and be safer than hardcore stock investments because eventually over the years the interest will add up to where you could live comfortably and when you get fucked up in somewhere you have some emergency money to use if you lose your job or some stupid bullshit like that.

But what you should do is bank it. Get a job that you like, dont go hunting for the best paying one, just find what you like. Sit there with youre ass in a chair and live of the interest and what little you get for working at youre awesome job.

If I decide to 'live off interest' it would be pretty difficult since the interest would amount to about $40,000 a year and inflation is rising at the same rate. In other words, my banked money is not growing because I'm using the interest as living expenses, and it's actually shrinking because of inflation. I'm pretty much forced to eventually (in a couple of years or so) turn my $ into 'wealth'. that is, real estate, land, stocks, etc. I'm 19, I can definitely deal with 40k a year and not having to work, but it won't cut it later on in life.

Build a fallout shelter. A house underground built to Military Bunker Spec's. Line it all with about three feet of lead. Have a water purification system and a greenhouse, to provide oxygen and food. A full ventilation system for air flow and the likes.

This is all after youve invested and made around 50 million that is.

That's what I was sort of saying (even if it wasn't that comprehensible). You'll still need to find a job and work for income, unless you take up investing as your full time job (risky). This money just means you have more opportunities in life, and you can maybe find working doing something you really enjoy rather than working to pay the bills.

up until his last post, 3 ball was doing ok in this thread!
I have no advice, apart from live your life as normally as possible, with the odd investment here and there. I don't know about you but I wouldn't want to be 10 or 20 years down the line thinking "if I hadn't got that money, would I have pushed myself harder, onto better things?", by which I mean don't sit too comfortably and ignore your existing short and long term goals.

On a related note, one of my friends works for an insurance company who basically have to answer calls about this exact scenario, but the majority of men now dieing from cancer signed a release form back in the 70's that gave them £100, but waived their right to any action against harm caused by asbestos. Not knowing the risk, they all signed, got their hundred quid and now their grown-up children are wondering why their insurance companies won't pay their life insurance or anything. He said it's the most soul crushing thing he's ever had to do.
