Guru, greatest MC ever, IMO, whole package, represented exactly what hip-hop is

It wasn't working when shoshone tried in another thread too.  Dunno what the deal is.

Best part of this is when the trumpets come in at 5:15, when it gets to that part my face goes...

Can anyone recommend any other good instrumental hip-hop albums?  I always hear J Dilla - Donuts is good, but all of tracks on it are so short that it makes me skeptical of how much I'd like it.

Have you looked into the Trip-Hop genre much?  It shares a lot with hip-hop, but generally has no or much less emphasized vocals.

    HIPHOP
    J-Dilla is the man
Madlib makes some good instrumental stuff
Jake One has been pleasing me lately
RJD2 is a really solid producer that has a good catalog of instrumentals

    TRIPHOP
    Nightmares on Wax
    Little People
    Wax Tailor
    Emancipator

I almost exclusively listen to HipHop/TripHop/Lounge.  Let me know what you think of the above artists, there are a few different ways you can go in the genre...You can go busier like DJ Krush or chill the fuck out like Morcheeba

Madlib's Shades of Blue is a hip-hop/jazz hybrid album with longer tracks:

Donuts is good but I'm not a huge fan overall. It definitely has some killer tracks:

My absolute favourite is Prefuse 73. From his first:

    His second:

Surrounded by Silence is also worth checking out, but it's not as consistent as Vocal Studies or One Word Extinguisher. Here's a good one:

His other stuff is negligible. But seriously, listening to One Word all the way through is musical bliss.

I'M SO MAD. After my links don't work my font turns into Times New Roman for while I'm writing my next post (like right now) but then it doesn't appear that way once it's posted.

RJD2 is a pretty inconsistent producer IMO, but he's got some major gems:
(it's an instrumental track to begin with****)

I'll check out your list of trip-hop when I get home Greglar, though my understanding of the genre is that the vocals would be a big part of it since the quintessential trip-hop groups are Portishead and Massive Attack. But I don't recognize anyone on your list so I probably don't know anything.

He's so active that it's hard to be consistent, I love producers like him (and Madlib) that put out hordes of music.  I love the classic RJD2 sound, it's usually very obvious that it's RJD2, first got turned onto him when I listened to Soul Position (MC Blueprint+RJD2), ever since then i've been somewhat of a fanboy

I mean, check out this Astrud Gilberto remix...I think it's unreal, so good, and so ballsy.

As I wrote that part about trip-hop lyrics I was conflicted, I feel like the Hip-Hop genre is just more lyric-centric, especially the stuff I listen to.  Portishead is a great counter, but I never feel overpowered by the lyrics like I do with a lot of hip-hop, a much larger emphasis seems to be placed, within trip-hop, on making it all work together instead.

Shit, I'll start listening to these.  My appreciation for hip-hop weighs heavily on the production side so these all seem up that alley.  I've meant to delve more into the trip-hop genre, I have Portishead's Dummy and really enjoy that LP a lot.

I haven't listened to a lot of Portishead or Massive Attack lately...which is disappointing, I think Portishead is fantastic, "Roads" by Portishead about tears my soul apart every time I listen to it

it's a dope cut, Jazzy Jeff was very good, it took me a while to believe it myself.

Love Classic, Rakim has the best verse, Nas is pretty good, not huge on Kanye, and KRS is KRS

PS  Dan, you're awesome, I love your taste in music and the way you think about things, many <3's

After further review of suggestions I'm gonna download some Little People, Madlib, J Dilla, and Prefuse 73.  R.E.M. is one of those bands I've really felt like I should be into, but it never clicks with me.  I do like Losing My Religion and The One I Love though.

Today I've been listening to some post-punkish stuff

yo TMP, that was the one where you had a weapon that had like 50/50 uses kind of like pokemon right?  And you had like 4 worlds that you traveled to?  I have a lot of memories of that one

no, in this one you had the mana tree and the sword that kept leveling up and you could charge it up. you also had a chocobo. this was right after FF1 for NES i believe.

EDIT: i have no idea what game you're talking about but it sounds epic. FF adventure was made in 91.
